Finnish berries full of power!
Berries are one of Mother Nature's best gifts, and it's worth tucking in a couple of decilitres a day. By eating that much, you'll get a generous dose of vitamin C, a good amount of essential minerals and trace elements, fiber and polyphenols that help your body to thrive. Berries are low-calorie temptations and nutrient-dense solutions that will tantalize your many senses.
The pleasures of berries come in many forms. Alongside canned or frozen berries, berry powders and dried berries are a handy way to add tasty nutrients to your body in a fairly compact form: a heaping teaspoon of berry powder is equivalent to about a decilitre of fresh berries.
When it comes to berries, it makes sense to mix it up, and it's a good idea to scoop up different colored natural gifts on your plate every day. Berries have a wide range of health benefits but currently have few permitted health claims, which are mentioned in this article. Fortunately, however, berries are the subject of much research around the world, and the evidence for their health benefits will grow stronger in the future.
Lingonberry
The red lingonberry is a berry rich in fiber, vitamins E and C and minerals such as manganese. Lingonberries also contain a wide variety of polyphenols, lignans, proanthocyanidins - and resveratrol, for example, as much as in dark grapes.
Like cranberries, lingonberries are beneficial for the health of the urinary tract. In fact, many people have found that a lingonberry or cranberry juice diet is effective in keeping their urinary tract symptoms under control.
The flavonols in lingonberries act as antioxidants, which have been shown to prevent cellular oxidation. A number of studies are underway on lingonberries in relation to: weight management and blood pressure regulation.
Blueberry
Blueberries are strong in colour and are rich in anthocyanins, many of which act as cell-protecting antioxidants. Blueberries are also a source of vitamin E and fiber, as well as flavonols, tannins and lignans.
The stomach-friendly blueberry is also good for eye and vascular health.
Cranberry
The bitter-sweet cranberry is packed with vitamin C and fiber. It also contains lignans, proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins, as well as phenolic compounds, notably quercetin and myrcetin. Quercetin is particularly popular among people fighting allergic reactions.
Cranberry, a resistance booster, is the best friend of both the urinary tract and the heart.
Blackcurrant
Did you know that just 50 grams of fresh or frozen blackcurrants is enough to meet your daily vitamin C needs? In addition to vitamin C, which strengthens resistance and fights fatigue, blackcurrants are rich in vitamin E and flavonoids. Blackcurrant seeds contain Omega-6 fatty acids.
Blackcurrants are good for muscle and joint health and can also help with weight loss. Blackcurrants are also good for the health of our blood vessels, eyes and respiratory system.
Sea buckthorn
For its nutritional value, sea buckthorn is the king of our wild berries. Its berries and seeds are full of oil, mainly monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Famous for its vitamin C content, sea buckthorn is also rich in vitamin E and fiber. Polyphenols in sea buckthorn include flavonols and proanthocyanidins.
As a vitamin C bomb, sea buckthorn boosts our immune system and is also good for the health of our skin and blood vessels. And that's not all: sea buckthorn is also our digestive best friend.
